I had just finished lugging my bags onto the elevator with my left hand, my right holding a complimentary tap beer I accepted at check-in after a long drive into Savannah. I quickly sighed, sipping my drink, when I finally noticed the couple in evening gowns and brightly colored masquerade masks standing beside me in the elevator.

As they got off on the next floor and headed to their lively soirée, it was clear: I was staying somewhere that knew how to make its own fun.

The Thompson Savannah is about half a mile from the edge of the city's historic district, where revelers gather for everything from ghost tours to a spirited drink at an 18th-century pirate’s hangout. The center of Savannah’s downtown district is another mile away, but the hotel has been bringing its buoyant vibe to the new Eastern Wharf neighborhood since its opening in 2021.

There always seems to be something lively happening in and around here: In the fall, a popular beer, bourbon, and barbecue festival assembles on the riverfront just outside the front door. During the holidays, local architects and engineering firms design epic gingerbread houses, as hotel visitors vote on their favorites to benefit a children's charity.

The most dynamic part of the property is Fleeting, the first-floor restaurant that showcases cutting-edge takes on Lowcountry cuisine. The menu attracts locals and visitors alike to try its latest takes on fresh shrimp, crab cakes, and half-shell oysters — the latter being its most acclaimed dish. I’m not much of an oyster person, but I loved the roasted oysters garnished with butter and capers, and my son happily chomped on his burger and fries. Don’t get tied down to any particular order if you can go for a second visit at another time of year, as dishes rotate with the seasons to highlight the best of what local farms have to offer.

Outside the restaurant, Amanda Marks sees that the hotel keeps a lively vibe. I met her donning her favorite teal and yellow banana shirt and matching banana earrings in support of the local baseball team, the riotous Savannah Bananas. Marks is the only Les Clefs d'Or concierge in town, making her part of a prestigious group of global concierges who can recommend and organize unforgettable experiences for their guests. Marks adds her artistic flair to make visitors’ stays memorable; the word is starting to get out that she likes to sketch pup portraits as a welcome gift for dogs who stay in the hotel with their humans.

When it was time to get into the eccentricities of Savannah, Thompson Savannah gave me a head start. They offer a complimentary Tesla drop-off service anywhere within a three-mile radius of the hotel, and getting to landmarks like Colonial Park Cemetery, Chippewa Square, and the Sorrel-Weed House were a short ride away.

Here’s my review of the Thompson Savannah, a modern space embracing the spirited atmosphere of Georgia’s most historic city.

The Rooms

This riverfront property has 172 rooms and 21 suites, ranging in price from $279 a night for a standard king room to $2,150 for their most extravagant suite. The hotel is perpendicular to the Savannah River, so most rooms either have a view of the city or a view of the Savannah River, where I liked to watch the container ships float by. Herringbone wood floors anchor midcentury modern furniture in each room.

I stayed in a double queen room and especially liked the refrigerator pull-out drawer for the minibar’s sparkling water and sodas. Another cabinet was stocked with Kyri’s Kookies, sunscreen, and mini liquor bottles. The Thompson Suite, the largest in the hotel, includes a full kitchen and dining table, a pool table, and floor-to-ceiling windows that provide a panoramic view of the river and downtown Savannah.

Executive Chef Victoria Shore shines with her seasonal explorations of farm-to-table southern seafood at Fleeting. Dinner is where the restaurant stands out, not only in its dishes but also in its elegant ambiance and attentive wait staff.

Delicious food is available even outside of its evening hours, though. The following day, I enjoyed a hearty breakfast hash of grilled okra, sweet potatoes, and a sunny-side-up egg. Fleeting also hosts a jazz brunch on Sundays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. My son wasn’t up for a large breakfast that morning, so we popped into the adjacent building to reach Stevedore, the bakery and coffee shop. We couldn’t resist a chocolate chip cookie, which was a big hit with my son.

On the hotel’s 13th floor, at Bar Julian, you can sip a cocktail while enjoying beautiful views of the Talmadge Memorial Bridge and the surrounding skyline. Bar Julian is the city’s tallest rooftop. It also serves light Mediterranean food. Every Tuesday, Bar Julian donates 20 percent of sales to a local charity during its 5–7 p.m. happy hour.

Activities and Experiences

Thompson Savannah hosts pool parties on the second floor on its La Fête Du Rosé pool deck during summer. Outside of events, the wading pool and private cabanas give a calming vibe while overlooking the riverfront below. Next to the pool is a small gym with Peloton bikes, free weights, and treadmills. Peloton videos are available on each room’s TV if you'd rather work out privately, and guests can also request yoga mats delivered to their rooms. Thompson Savannah doesn’t have an in-house spa, but there’s a Woodhouse Spa next door to the hotel.

Accessibility and Sustainability

Savannah is an older city that can be challenging to navigate with disabilities. Its cobblestone streets and businesses in the historic center that often require a step to enter can make it difficult for wheelchair users. However, since the Thompson Savannah is a newer building, it didn’t have to retrofit accessible features into an older building. The hotel is equipped with seven accessible rooms, each with roll-in showers, lowered light switches and thermostats, strobe emergency lights, and smoke detectors.

Fleeting’s relies on fresh food from local farms and shares information about its purveyors on the menu. What it doesn’t source from farms may have come from the hotel’s own herb and vegetable garden, and food waste is composted.

Location

The Thompson Savannah is in the Eastern Wharf neighborhood next to the Savannah River, about a half-mile walk up a small hill to the edge of the city’s historic district and about 1.5 miles (about a 30-minute walk) to the center of downtown. It’s an 11.5-mile ride from the Savannah airport. For those who drive into town, there’s metered street parking or a city-run parking deck next door with daily parking rates that don’t exceed $25.

Once you get settled, you won’t need a car unless you plan a day trip to the beach; the city’s nearest beaches are about 30 minutes away on Tybee Island. If you’re keen on checking out the town, take advantage of the hotel’s complimentary bike rentals. You could also request a drop-off with its complementary Tesla car service, which takes you anywhere within three miles of the hotel. Use it to check out some of Savannah’s most notable sites, including Forsyth Park, the city’s largest park square, and the SCAD Museum, where you’ll enjoy contemporary art housed inside a 19th-century armory.

How to Get the Most Value Out of Your Stay

As a Hyatt property, you can book your stay starting at around 17,000 Hyatt points per night for a standard king bed or double queen room. If you’re not using points, Thompson Savannah posts offers on its website for rotating deals such as food and drink credits or discounts for Hyatt members.
