National Weather Service confirms 7 Lowcountry tornados resulted from Tropical Storm Debby

(WCBD) — The National Weather Service confirmed an additional tornado spun off from Tropical Storm Debby earlier this week, bringing the total number to seven.Forecasters said an EF-0 tornado touched down on Kiawah Island, and another spun through Ladys Island which was an EF-0. CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) — The National Weather Service confirmed an additional tornado spun off from Tropical Storm Debby earlier this week, bringing the total number to seven.
Forecasters said an EF-0 tornado touched down on Kiawah Island, and another spun through Ladys Island which was an EF-0. The Moncks Corner tornado that obliterated an Arbys and damaged the Walmart was an EF-1.
Later Tuesday night, NWS said an EF-1 made landfall on Isle of Palms and an EF-0 spun through West Ashley.
Two EF-1 tornadoes also touched down on Edisto Beach late Monday night.
All seven tornados originated from one of Debby’s outer rain bands, according to NWS.
Isle of Palms: EF-1
The Isle of Palms twister made landfall near 25th Avenue Monday at 9:33 p.m., where it caused minor damage to a roof and pulled out a door frame. According to the NWS damage survey, the twister’s path continued down 25th Avenue between Palm and Harnett Boulevards, causing minor damage to homes along the way.
It continued damaging homes, moving northwest and snapping trees as it lifted near Waterway Boulevard and 24th Avenue before dissipating in the Intra Coastal Waterway around 9:37 p.m.
Experts estimated that 29 homes were damaged in some way by this twister, whether directly or indirectly. The estimated peak wind was 87 mph.
West Ashley: EF-0
West Ashley’s tornado began near the Citadel Mall and I-526 Tuesday at 12:14 a.m., where surveyors found small limb debris. Experts believe the twister then sporadically touched down in an uninhabited area by Henry Tecklenburg Drive south of Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital.
It moved northwest across Glenn McConnell Parkway, uprooting trees near Bairds Cove and Mary Ader Avenue. The twister continued to push through marshy and wooded areas until crossing Bees Ferry Road.
The path moved down to the southern end of Shadowmoss Plantation Golf Club, where it snapped and uprooted more trees. It eventually dissipated south of Mulrfield Parkway around 12:22 a.m. The estimated peak wind was 77 mph.
Moncks Corner: EF-1
Early Tuesday morning damage reports started coming in from Moncks Corner. Images show heavy damage to the Arby’s restaurant near U.S. Highway 52 and a truck flipped onto another vehicle.
“Damaged the Arbys, went between the Walmart and the Dollar Tree building. Luckily, we have minor injuries. It didn’t hit any residential, so we’re really blessed,” said Moncks Corner Mayor Thomas Hamilton.
According to the damage survey, Moncks Corner’s twister started in McCormick Tuesday at 2:53 a.m., snapping two trees behind Applebees and damaging the sign before turning towards the Arby’s.
“This was the location of the strongest damage as numerous windows were blown out at the Arbys on both the west and east-facing sides of the building. The rooftop A/C was also blown into the Arbys parking lot. However, no other structural damage was noted,” the survey said.
While at Arby’s, the tornado reached a peak speed of 95 mph. The path continued, doing minor damage to the Walmart before heading towards Mitton Road and Kitfield Road.
“Finally, the tornado moved to the northwest and dissipated on the northern end of the Pinopolis peninsula on the south end of Lake Moultrie,” NWS said. It dissipated around 3 a.m.
Edisto Beach: EF1
NWS confirmed Tuesday that the twister that tore through Palmetto Boulevard on Edisto Beach was an EF-1.
Edisto’s tornado formed from a waterspout off of one of Debby’s outer rain bands that made landfall on the beach Monday at 9:35 p.m. The tornado had estimated peak winds at 97 mph, the National Weather Service determined.
The twister took off roof decking, shingles, and siding before moving northwest over a marsh region, snapping and uprooting trees on Palmetto Road.
According to the NWS damage survey, the twister considerably damaged several homes on Fishing Creek Drive. Three homes’ roofs were removed entirely, which is where the EF1 rating comes from, with winds around 97 mph while moving through this area.
The twister dissipated soon after over the marshy region of north Palmetto Road at 9:45p.m.
A second EF-1 tornado on Edisto Beach was confirmed by NWS surveyors late Wednesday night.
That twister moved onshore at the south end of Edisto Island near the 2700 block of Point Street at 10:08 p.m. Monday with estimated peak winds of 90 mph. It snapped and twisted some small trees and damaged roof shingles on at least one home.
The porch and roof of another home on Palmetto Boulevard were also severely damaged.
The tornado continued to move rapidly toward the northwest, crossing around the 2700 block of Myrtle Street, causing minor damage to other nearby homes.
It then moved into the southern portion of the Plantation Golf Curse where it dissipated at 10:11 p.m.
No injuries were reported.
Kiawah Island: EF-0
Kiawah’s EF-0 twister started as a waterspout before moving onshore on Surfsong Road Monday at 10:55 p.m. in between the 30 and 40 block, according to the damage survey report. No significant damage occurred at initial landfall.
The tornado pushed through swirling straight through the center of Turtle Point Golf course, snapping trees and limbs before hitting Doral Open Road. The EF-0 continued to Governors Drive taking trees with it before dissipating over the marsh between Governors Drive and Rhetts Bluff Road around 10:59 p.m., NWS said.

KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. (WCSC) - Opposition to proposed development and development already in the works on Kiawah Island has prompted the developer, Kiawah Resort Associates, to file not one, but two lawsuits.
One lawsuit is solely against the Town of Kiawah Island, but the second lawsuit is against the town, property owners and the Homeowners Association.
The first suit involves a condominium complex development already being built, The Cape.
It claims that following the town’s approval of the site plans and parking requirements back in 2020, in January of this year, the town changed its position to require all parking in a different location from what was originally decided. The developers say that’s impossible at this point in the process.
The second suit concerns two proposed developments along Beachwalker Drive, that residents have expressed concerns about to the town. Residents believe the projects violate the provisions of the island-wide general covenants.
“Even someone back in high school probably read the Bill of Rights and knows that part of the first amendment is the inherent right to petition the government for redress of grievances,” PreserveKiawah Chair Larry Rutkowski said.
The lawsuit seeks a ruling from a judge saying the opposite and seeks damages for “the intentional actions of these Homeowners Associations for attempting to keep these projects from proceeding.”
Rutkowski said this action from the developer completely rubs him the wrong way.
“Effectively they are seeking a declaratory judgment that what they did is okay, and they should be allowed to proceed, but most people on the island think that hasn’t been the case, there is clearly inadequate parking,” Rutkowski said. “This trampling of citizen rights because they had the nerve to actually point out what they perceived to be a failing in the development plans is just intolerable to me and a strange way to build a relationship with your neighbors.”
Kiawah Resort Associates said in a statement, We have attempted to work with the town and the associations on many occasions to resolve this situation and have offered a myriad of practical solutions to address this. Kiawah Resort Associates regrets having to take legal action but at this stage, we were forced to do so. We are being deprived of our valuable property rights, largely due to politics and a desire by some to prevent us from proceeding with our development entitlements. Because the town and associations refuse to change their positions, we seek the decisions of an independent, unbiased court as to whether we have been treated fairly in accordance with the law or not.
When asked about the lawsuits, Kiawah Island Mayor Bradley Belt provided the following statement:
I don’t have any comment regarding the pending litigation, other than to note that the town continues to pursue the appropriate process to mediate this issue with the applicant.

Comprising 20 miles of shoreline and 2,000 acres, this neighborhood has been planned with the area’s natural riches (like maritime forest and salt marsh) and long-standing agricultural history in mind. “It’s a beautiful, pretty much one-of-a-kind place,” says Jeff Snyder, the neighborhood’s Chief Environmental Officer. “There are maybe only two or three places like this left.” From some 500 acres of saltwater brackish ponds to the working farm (which is home to produce, wildflowers, goats, cattle, and bees), much of the property is designated to remain green space. It’s a commitment celebrated by the residents who have chosen to make the place home, many of whom participate in Kiawah River’s environment- and sustainability-focused efforts, which range from bluebird population tracking to composting.

A look at some of the state's wealthiest cities and communities may give you a couple of ideas.
In a recent analysis, Forbes pulled data from the Census Bureau's 2022 American Community Survey to track down S.C.'s 50 richest cities. The cities were identified based on a four-factor scoring system: median household income, mean (average) household income, median home value, and median property taxes paid.
Many coastal areas made up the top 10, where one island getaway took the throne for richest community in the state. An Upstate town was also listed among the top 20.

Kiawah Island is SC's richest city
Kiawah Island may be small, but for those who live there, it is a sanctuary, lined with 10 miles of protected shores and sunshine. It is also home to award-winning resorts and championship golf courses. Located southeast of Charleston, the largely private island has over 1,000 total households, surpassing the number of households in most of the state's wealthiest cities, according to Forbes. Its median household income is the highest in S.C. at $216,750, and its mean household income is also the state's highest at $366,392. In the Forbes study, Kiawah Island had the second highest median home value at $1,442,000. Median property taxes also exceeded $8,000 per year. Talk about the high life.

What is the richest city in the Upstate?
This Greenville suburb may not have made it into the top 10, but it certainly isn't too far behind. When it comes to living luxe inland, Five Forks is the most affluent area in the Upstate, coming in at No. 13 on the list. The quaint community features historic homes, highly rated schools, plenty of parks, and nearby access to Woodruff Road, Greenville's destination for dining and shopping. Per Forbes, Five Forks has a median household income of $125,343 and a mean household income of $151,733. The median home value is worth $351,000, with median property taxes listed at $1,947. In the Upstate, the area accounts for 6,375 households and is growing fast due to Greenville being one of the nation's most desired areas in terms of livability.

Kiawah Beachwalker Park: Making the Top Beach List
A lot goes into deciding what beaches get bestowed with being named to one of Stephen Leatherman’s beach lists. Stephen, AKA Dr. Beach isn’t just some permanent beach bum. He is a doctor of coastal science and knows what makes a great beach.
Kiawah Beachwalker Park is #5 on the Dr. Beach Top Ten List in 2024
One of the first years he created the list the beach local to me in Florida was named number one in the entire country! Siesta Beach is Sarasota county has made the top lists of beaches in the world, too. I was intrigued to see a South Carolina beach on the list. Siesta Beach has sand that looks like talcum powder, and usually, the Gulf of Mexico is a beautiful shade of turquoise. Would this beach in South Carolina be similar?
Planning a Trip To Kiawah Island
At a little under four hours from the Upstate, I don’t think Kiawah Island is suitable for a day trip. Grabbing a hotel for the night is the best way for you to enjoy a day at this exceptional beach.
The Andell Inn on Kiawah Island is a Marriott boutique hotel. The hotel has all the amenities you’d expect from a Marriott property, plus they provide a free shuttle to Kiawah Beachwalker Park.
The island isn’t very commercialized, so you’ll need to grab any picnic provisions or beach snacks before you leave the Charleston area. They do have a picnic area with grills, but they are first come first serve, so keep that in mind when packing your lunch. There is a convenience store a few blocks away from the beach to grab ice and anything you may have forgotten.
Make sure you stop at Five Below or another discount retailer and grab the kids some boogie boards! I had the idea to grab them and didn’t realize that they were the cool thing to have at the beach. Every kid there had one, and at just $5, it was the best decision ever.
Spending The Day at Kiawah Beachwalker Park
If you don’t already own a beach-style wagon or a rolling cooler, I suggest you look into getting them. The walk from the parking lot to the shore includes a trek down a long boardwalk. I have never regretted leaving my rolling cooler at home more than on that boardwalk.
Once you arrive at the park, you will need to pay for parking. During the summer months, an attendant is on duty to take payments. On weekdays in the summer, the cost is $15 and weekends it is $20. The parking fee is slightly less after Labor Day and before Memorial Day. Should the park be at capacity, you can leave your name and number, head to the open-air market Freshfields Village and they will notify you when you can head back.
Even when the parking lot is at capacity, there is plenty of space on the beach. You can rent a beach chair and umbrellas at the beach or bring your own. One of the wonderful things about Kiawah Beachwalker Park is that, unlike other South Carolina beaches, there are no restrictions here on tents and sunshades. You can set up camp for the day and have your family protected from the sun while they enjoy the beach!
There must be a pod of Bottlenose dolphins that love this beach just as much as the humans. They are a famous sight in the water there, just take note that getting too close or harassing them is illegal.
After A Long Day At Kiawah Beachwalker Park
Once it’s time to head home, you can clean up all the gear and the kids at the top end of the boardwalk. There are changing rooms and showers available. I’m going to warn you after a long day in the sun; the fresh cold water feels SO GOOD coming out of that shower. My kids just stood there staring at me, while I enjoyed it for way too long.
Before I had left, I was already planning a return trip. Due to the calmer, family-friendly nature of this beach and the non-commercialization of the island, the beach here is quite enjoyable.

KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. (WCSC) - Property owners and the Homeowners Association on Kiawah Island have been fighting against proposed developments for months and now attorneys are involved.
The attorney representing the developers, Kiawah Resort Associates, sent a letter to the attorney representing Kiawah HOA’s, saying their concerns they expressed to the town about the development are groundless and are delaying the approval of the site plans.
It goes on to request that the HOA board members, who represent property owners, tell the town in writing that they withdraw their assertions that the two projects violate restrictive covenants.
The letter also states at the end that if this forces the developers to obtain a determination that there is no violation of restrictive covenants, they intend to seek to recover all losses, which has been perceived as a threat.
“It’s bad behavior,” PreserveKiawah Chair Larry Rutkowski said. “A lot has changed on Kiawah over the years and a lot of it unfortunately came with the change of ownership of the developer.”
“This is the kind of thing that you would hope to see, a community actively involved and making sure that their interests are being protected,” property owner and land development lawyer Tim Hazel said. “Well, apparently the developer isn’t used to that and has been pushing back.”
Hazel said this letter presents a freedom of speech issue and that South Carolina does not have an Anti-SLAPP law.
“Strategic legal action against public participation,” Hazel said. “Thirty-three states have essentially said this is not good and have legislated protections for the community against this kind of threat.”
Hazel said the issue is basically at a stalemate until the site plans are either approved or denied and then appeals from either side could follow from there.
The developments in question are multiple four-story condominium complexes within the Ocean Pines and West End areas on Beachwalker Drive. Community concerns include an uptick in traffic, stormwater management and that the complexes are not aligned with Kiawah’s “designing with nature” requirement.
“The Town reviews development projects for ordinance and zoning compliance. Citizens have a constitutional right to petition government, and HOAs and property owners are welcome to communicate with the Town regarding any questions or concerns they have about development projects which may impact their neighborhoods,” Kiawah Island Mayor Brad Belt said.
Kiawah Resort Associates did not respond to a request for comment.
